India’s exports of mangoes to the US which has set to resume after a gap of two years
The pandemic had brought to the exports of mangoes to the United States of America that had been emerging as a preferred destination. As per the norms the fruit has to be irradiated before it is shipped out of the country.
As per India Export Data, the country is set to resume exports of mangoes to the US under the framework of agreement signed between US Department of Agriculture and the Department of Agriculture and Farmer Welfare of India.
India did not export mangoes to the United States during the past two and half years as the US phytosanitary inspectors did not visit during 2020 and 2021. The new agreement also covers pomegranate and both items will begin arriving in the US from India starting from February.
The development comes months after the 12th India-USA Trade policy forum meeting held in November 2021 that paved the way for the latest framework agreement. A joint statement issued at the end of the meeting had announced that both sides would fast track the phytosanitary work required for exports of mangoes to the United States.
As per the deal the United States will import American cherries, Alfalfa hay in return for Indian mangoes. The rule means that the US and India can follow joint protocol on irradiation, that can be certified by US inspectors at their port or they can accept Indian Certification too and visit some facilities.
As per the India Customs Data, the exports of mango, including its by-products to the United States of America were estimated at close to Rs 100 crores two years ago. In addition to alphonso, kesar and some of the varieties from South, Agricultural and processed food products export development authority will try to push Langda, Dussehri, Jardalu and Himsagar.
Arab countries are the biggest export destination for Indian mangoes. Apart from USA the European Union and Russia are other important markets for Indian mangoes. As per Indian exporters, USA is a growing market and other markets have reached saturation point.
