Vietnam is unfolding itself as a leader in manufacturing and sourcing as compared to other developing markets in the Asian region. As per Vietnam Import Data, the country was the 20th importer country all across the globe.
The major imports of Vietnam include machinery &
industrial equipment, clothing and shoe industries, automobiles, metal and
chemical products, petroleum products and electronic items.
The Vietnam Custom Data shows that the country imports of
plastic materials have increased by 17% in volume and sharply by 38.4% in value
in the year 2021. Vietnam imported over 3.1 million tons of plastic worth
nearly 5 billion US dollars in the first five months of this year, with a year
on year rise of 19.9% in volume and 50.6% in value.
The key and the largest suppliers of plastic and plastic
products included China, South Korea, Saudi Arabia and the United States as
shown by the Vietnam Import Data. Korea is one of the country’s major plastic
materials import partners. The import of raw PVC, PE and PP resins from Korean
market has increased to a great extent in terms of import volume.
The plastic market of Vietnam is bifurcated by type,
application and technology. By type the market is divided into traditional
plastics, engineering plastics and bio-plastics. By technology, the market is
segmented into blow molding, extrusion, injection molding and others. By
application, the plastic market of Vietnam is segmented into packaging,
electrical and electronics, building and construction, transportation,
furniture, bedding and other applications.
The country has spent around 6.8 billion US dollars
importing 4.7 million tons of plastic in the year 2019. The country was among
top 5 countries importing plastic waste in 2018. The government of Vietnam has
decided to ban single-use plastic products by the year 2025 and targets to sell
no disposable plastics in its markets by 2021.
Vietnam imported 9.2m tons of US plastic scrap, placing the
country as the sixth largest importer of US plastic waste purchasing 7% of US
exports as per the Vietnam Export Data. This ban adds pressure to US virgin PET
producers to find ways to reduce their plastic waste.
