Covid-19 Times
Indonesian coal exports rose sharply in the year end of
2020, with shipments to China reaching an all time high. The increase took
overall shipment for last year to 407million, slightly higher than a government
set target for the year of 400 million tons, even though the exports for the
whole of 2020 fell on the year for the first time since 2015.
Indonesian coal production also exceeded the 550 million
tons target for 2020 with the output at around 563 million tons. As per
Indonesia Customs data, the total coal exports reached 459.1 million tons in 2019.
Indonesia managed to increase shipments to China this year
by 19.9% year on year to 82.6m tons through January to July 2021. Shipments to
India and Japan also declined sharply and any new restriction on Indonesian
coal exporters from the Indonesian government will just add to their already
big woes that they the Indonesian exporters are facing on the international
market.
